We Tested 3 Ways to Talk Abroad. Only One Passed the Taxi Test.

The free phone app, a screen translator, a one-button disc: five pass-or-fail questions, then a taxi ride that settled it.

The ECDF teamECDF Travel NotesYes, we make one of the three. So we judged with pass-or-fail questions you can check yourself, not scores.

In the video a young man says "Watch this, I speak English: where is the beach?" into a disc on his chest, and the disc asks it in Spanish, out loud. The answer comes back to him in English.

The question we get most since that video is fair: how is that different from the app already on my phone? So we took the three options people mention most on the same errands for a month.

No scores, because we would be grading our own homework. Six plain rows instead, five questions and one trade-off, each one you can check with your own eyes.

Why do the first two fail before the conversation starts?

Look at the rows again. The app and the screen gadget lose on the same line: somebody has to look down.

The phone app was built for one person reading one screen. A conversation is two people, two directions, and the second person is a stranger who never agreed to read your phone.

Your phone is always on the wrong side of the counter. Whichever way you turn it, one of you is reading instead of talking.

The screen translator fixes the phone problem and keeps the reading problem. Two people hunched over a second screen is still not a conversation; it is a shared homework sheet.

The taxi test: which one would you pick from the back seat?

Our tie-breaker. You are in a cab, the driver's eyes are on the road, and you need the hotel by the old harbor, not the one by the airport.

In the back of that cab you really have three choices.

1
Hold your phone over the seathe has to take his eyes off the road to read it, then type his answer while he drives
2
Read him a screen gadgetyou still lean over the seat, and his answer still comes back as text you squint at
3
Wear something that talks for youyou say the hotel, it says it in Spanish, he answers, and it says his answer back in English

Only the third choice lets the driver keep driving. The app failed the test outright; the screen gadget got the hotel name across and then had to be passed over the seat for the answer.

What does the winner actually have to do?

Write the test as a list and it reads like this. A real fix has to:

  • speak your sentence in their language, then speak their answer in yours
  • run on one button a stranger can press without a lesson
  • keep your phone in your pocket, out of a stranger's hands
  • need no typing and no screen for either of you
  • cover the languages of a whole trip, not one country

So what is the third option, exactly?

The ECDF translator is a round disc, matte graphite, hockey-puck size, with one microphone button in the center and a small blue light. It hangs on a lanyard on your chest or sits in your palm.

Set it up once in the free ECDF app on your phone, over Bluetooth, choose your two languages, and the phone goes back in your bag. From then on it is one button, and it works wherever your phone works.

Press and ask for the beach; it asks in Spanish. The man answers in Spanish, presses, and you hear his answer in English, with nothing typed, nothing read, and 165 languages printed on the box.

✗You type "where is the beach", turn the phone around, and a stranger holds your bank app while he reads.
✓You press, ask, and the disc asks in Spanish. He answers into it, and you hear it in English.

How does it feel in a real conversation?

This was the one row we could not put in a table, so here it is in words. The sentence leaves the disc, the answer goes back into the disc, and the two of you keep looking at each other.

The taxi driver noticed. The woman at the pharmacy counter noticed, and after a week we stopped noticing, because it had started to feel like talking.

What does each option cost you over two years?

The app is free, and it stays free, which is why it wins the set-up row and loses the taxi. A screen translator runs two to four hundred dollars, and some models sell a plan on top of that. An interpreter bills by the hour and will not ride in your cab. ECDF is bought once, with no monthly fee and no credits that expire, and the free app is part of the deal.

What should you look for, and what should you walk past?

Look for: something that talks in both directions, lives on your body rather than in your hand, runs on one button, and is bought once.

Walk past: anything you must hand to a stranger, anything that makes both of you look down, and anything that bills you monthly for a trip you take twice a year.

Yes, the winner is ours. The taxi test is not; run it with the app on your next ride and watch where the driver's eyes go.

30-DAYMONEY-BACK

Run the taxi test yourself.

We can publish a table all day. The test that matters is yours. Take the disc on the whole trip. Wear it into the first cab, press it at the pharmacy, hand it across a market stall. Ask the driver for the hotel by the old harbor and see whether his eyes leave the road. If, after the whole trip, you are not amazed, send it back within 30 days and we refund every cent. We would rather you test it in a cab than take our word for it.

Questions people ask before they order

Does it work without my phone?

It pairs with your phone, so keep the phone in your pocket or bag. Set-up is once, in the free ECDF app over Bluetooth; after that you press the disc and the phone stays put. Nobody in the cab ever sees it.

Will it need internet once I'm abroad?

Through the free app it uses your phone's connection, which means it works wherever your phone works. Check that your phone works at your destination before you go; if it does, the disc does too. There is nothing extra to buy from us.

Can the driver really answer into it?

Yes. He presses the same button, talks in his language, and the disc says his answer to you in English. He does not need the app, your phone, or a lesson: one press, then talk.

What about accents and fast speakers?

Speak at a normal pace, one sentence at a time, and ask them to do the same. If something comes back odd, press and say it a shorter way. Each exchange is saved in the app so you can read it back later.

Is it a subscription?

No. You buy the disc once, the app is free, and there are no credits that expire between trips. Nothing renews, nothing bills you monthly.

How long does the battery last?

Charge it with the cable in the box and it is good for days of normal use. Charge it the night before a travel day, the same time you charge your phone.

How do I return it if it fails my test?

Contact ECDF support within 30 days of receiving it, follow the return steps, and you get a full refund once it is back with us. Use it on the whole trip first; the guarantee exists for exactly that.

Which languages does it cover?

165, printed on the box. You pick the two you need in the app before you go, and you can change the pair for the next stop on the trip.

The winner is not the fanciest gadget on the table. It is the only one that let a taxi driver keep driving while he answered us. Your phone stays where your wallet is, your eyes stay on the person, and the answer comes back to you in English. Take it on the next trip and run the test in the first cab.
