Car salesman video · Sept 23, 2026He understood every word at the night market. Most tourists wouldn't have. Here are the five mistakes, and the one fix.

“This tourist doesn't understand anything. When he pays, we take his backpack.” Two vendors at a night market in Bangkok, talking over a tray of grilled squid, three feet from an American with a backpack on one shoulder.
He understood every word, because the disc on his chest said it in English, quietly, into the noise. He shifted the backpack to his front, paid the price on the sign, and walked off with his dinner.
Most tourists would not have heard it. Not because they are careless, but because of five mistakes that everyone makes the moment they stop understanding.
A smile is not a translation. It is the universal sign for “I have no idea what you said, and I would like this to be over.” Vendors, drivers and clerks read it instantly, and some of them price it.
The fix: answer in their language, out loud, in the first ten seconds. The moment you can answer, you stop being a smile.

“Charge him double, he'll pay. When he opens the wallet, watch the backpack.” The price on the sign said one thing. The price he was told said another. The fix: ask “is that the price on the sign?” and understand the answer before the wallet comes out.
The translation app needs your unlocked phone in the other person's hands to work both ways. In a crowd, at night, that is the worst possible object to hand over. The fix: a device that speaks out loud and stays on your chest, so nothing changes hands.
The niece who speaks a little Thai is at a different stall. A group with one translator has one point of failure. The fix: each traveler carries their own way to understand, the way each one carries their own wallet.
Head down, squinting at a translation, you miss the shrug, the glance at the accomplice, the hand drifting toward your bag. The fix: keep your eyes up and let the disc do the reading.
It is the ECDF translator: a round disc the size of a hockey puck, one microphone button in the center, worn on a lanyard. You set it up once in the free ECDF app on your phone, by Bluetooth, pick your two languages, and from then on it is one button. It works wherever your phone works.
You press and talk, and it says your sentence in their language, out loud. They press and answer, and it says their answer back to you in English. Both ways, every time, while you look at them and not at a screen.

My dad has had a really hard time learning English, so going somewhere by himself is difficult. This little translator translates what he says and translates back whatever they answer. He can have his independence back.
